Wetumpka Intermediate School Library Media Center! Wetumpka Intermediate School has a collection of over 13,000 books for students and teachers use. We subscribe to all Accelerated Reader quizzes in the AR enterprise- http://www.renlearn.com Mission Statement Wetumpka Intermediate School Library Media Program is to "ensure that students are effective users of ideas and information" (Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning). Wetumpka Intermediate School accomplishes this by implementing education programs that enrich and support students and teachers. It is the duty of the library staff to provide the school community with a wide range of materials and services that will encourage growth in knowledge, foster information literacy, and that will encourage a love of reading. These materials and services will also help to develop literary, cultural and appreciation of the arts and sciences. The library media center strives to stimulate intellectual curiosity and to establish the habit of lifelong learning and continuous education through the proper use of information sources. Goals - To ensure that students are effective user of ideas and information
- To provide library media materials and services appropriate to the curriculum of Elmore County School District
- To provide opportunities for collaboration between the library media specialist and classroom teachers to integrate information literacy and technology into the classroom instruction.
- To promote and provide instruction in information literacy skills to teachers and students.
- To provide library media materials and services that make reading fun for students.
Objectives: - Will provide opportunities for suggestions from teachers, students, and parents and other various selection tools (ACOS-Alabama Course of Study and District Curriculum) suggestions such as Team Math, Science, Reading and Art are also criteria for selection.
- Will provide professional materials to help teachers plan lessons that are appropriate to the curriculum of the school
- Will attend grade level meetings periodically, to keep up with what is going on in grade levels
- Maintain an updated schedule/calendar (Week A/Week B schedule) for teachers to consult when planning lessons, published monthly my Mr. McKenzie
- Will introduce students and teachers to information literacy that integrates library media lessons that supports classroom teacher's lesson
- Will include programs that will make reading fun for both students and teachers
General Information LMC behavior policy is based on Wetumpka Intermediate School-Wide Rules: 1. We respect others. 2. We keep our hands, feet, and objects to ourselves at all times 3. We are prepared for class 4. We are responsible for our own actions The Library Media Center expectations are as follow: 1. Listen carefully and follow directions 2. Be kind to books and other resources 3. Be kind to others Daily Operations - Every student may check out two (2) books. (More may be negotiable by Mrs. Wynn and grade level teachers. Student reading log with patron barcode is required to check out books.
- Books are due in 14 days. Students may renew their books. If they have overdue books, they may not check out another book until the overdue book is turned in or renewed.
- Students may come to check out books as often as needed during flexible time with their library pass and with their teacher's permission
- Teachers may check out as many books as needed. Due dates for teachers are flexible.
- Trade books, Videos, Books on Tape are checked out for teachers' use in the classroom.
Library Media Classes Fourth, Fifth and sixth grade classes come to the library for instruction on an "as needed" basis. The library media specialist and the classroom teacher collaborate to plan a lessons that enrich what the students are doing t in the classroom and that will foster information literacy. Additionally, each class is scheduled twice monthly (Week A/Week B) for 30 minutes for both lesson and library book check out. Emergency Checkout If the automation system goes down, the Library Media Staff will make a decision of one of the following: 1. Use Destiny Remote to check-out 2. Cancel checkouts for the remainders of the day, to be rescheduled when automation system is back up. The media specialist or media assistant will alert staff as to when a decision has been made. Alternatives: Book Swap- Bring personal book from home to exchange with one you haven't read Classroom Libraries Class Sets of Books (Trade books) Wetumpka Public Library Overdue - Each day a book is overdue, the late fee is (.10) ten per book.
- Overnight materials late fee is (.25)twenty-five per day.
- It is our goal of the LMS to print out overdue notices monthly.
Payment for Lost and Damaged Books - If an item is lost or damaged, the LMS will send home a bill for payment of the item. If the book is lost, please keep your receipt. If the item is found, we will refund money if the book is found within the school year (August-May). If the book is damaged beyond repair, a replacement cost of the item is required.
Services and Programs for Patrons: Students, Faculty and Staff and Parents Accelerated Reader is a computerized reading tool that allows students to read books, take self-directed computerized tests to check comprehension, and earn points based on questions answered correctly. Wetumpka Intermediate School subscribes annually to all quizzes in the Accelerated Reader Enterprises.(http://www.renlearn.com/) After a based on the length and complexity of the book and the number of correct answers given., each teacher determines how they will reward students for reading. Accelerated Reader Clubs (2008-2009-AR Theme: Accelerated Reader Hall of Fame Super Stars) Students who meet their nine week goals are entered into a drawing for a Wal-mart gift card or a cash prize. One name in each grade will be drawn each nine weeks - 25 point club- Juice and rewards party
- 50 point club- Movie Party (AR Hall of Fame begins at 50 points)
- 100 point club- Proud Parent AR Bumper Sticker Movie, Popcorn, & Juice
- 200 Point Club- AR T-Shirt, Movie, Popcorn & Juice Party
- 250-500 & Beyond- Movie, Popcorn, Juice & Goody Bags
- Top AR Point Earners in each grade will attend a luncheon at Pizza Hut with administrators and LMS.
- AR parties are held on first Fridays monthly in the Library Media Center (Day subject to change)
- Students must meet 85% average to participate. (Next school year in 2009, 85-90% average is required.
Reading Renaissance Year End Plans - Number of Top AR Earners will be determined by the Literary Committee
Trophies will be awarded to the Top Three Point Earners in grades 4, 5 and 6 graders on Award's Day. Literary World Travelers Award will be select and awarded on Award's Day to a student who displays: Excellent reading enthusiasm Works toward their goals each 9 week Exemplifies an accelerated reader Opportunity to recognize a struggling reader
Library Helpers Our library helpers are currently select by the library media staff and teachers committee. The library media specialist considers other factors that go into choosing a library helper. Library helpers are responsibilities include: - Straightening up bookshelves
- Shelving books
- Watering plants
- Turning on/off computers
- Open School Supply Store
Services Printing Students may print information from the library printers with permission. Teachers, feel free to print out information as you need it. Please think before you print to conserve paper and ink. There are two(2) computer labs for teachers' and student's use. Teachers are scheduled for their whole class to use the labs weekly. Additional Services for Teachers Teachers are encouraged to make use of the library media specialist and the library media resources. If you need us to pull books for you on a certain topic for a unit of study, please let us know in advance, and we will get the resources to you as soon as possible. If you would like to bring your students in to make selections for a classroom unit or for independent reading, please do! If you are going to assign your students a research project, talk to Mrs. Wynn about how we can work together to incorporate information literacy skills into your projects. Equipment Checkout •· TV/VCR/DVDs are stationed on your hall-Thompson, Olsen, Burdett. •· Laptops - Four laptops with LCD projectors, DVD players and speakers are available on cart for check out on a daily basis. Teachers are to sign out and return the same day. •· Video Cameras Teacher Material Request (Books and AV) and checkout policy Teachers may check out materials as needed. Teachers may check out any materials including equipment and audiovisuals. Teachers may check out materials for 30 days. However, if the materials are needed, the teachers will be notified to return the needed materials. Students who are sent to check out materials in a teacher's name must have a signed request from the teacher before the materials may be checked out in the teacher's name. AV Problems If you notice a malfunction with a piece of equipment you are using, please report the problem to the media center (in writing if possible) so that the equipment can be repaired before further use. If you have a hardware problem with your computer, fill out a work order and send it to Ms. Atkins, technology coordinator. Channel One TV Equipment Mounted televisions are located in all six grade classrooms. Our school no longer receives service from Channel One, however, the equipment is usable. Instructional CDs' and videos can be shown on the head -in- united located the library media center. Lamination Teachers may bring materials to be laminated to the library media center daily. Teachers are advised to write their name on the materials. Lamination may be picked up on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Overhead Projector Lamps Overhead lamps are available in the LMC. If assistance is need to replace the lamp, ask the media staff for help. Heavy Equipment Under no circumstances should students be allowed to handle equipment such as TV/VCR, etc. This is very important to prevent student injury.
Book Fairs are usually scheduled in the fall and spring.
